Five details beyond “silky”

A product-page checklist for fibre content, dimensions, construction and care.

Begin with the composition

Write down the fibre content exactly as the listing states it, including percentages and any distinction between outer fabric, lining and trim. Descriptions such as silky, silk-like and satin do not provide a silk percentage. If composition is missing or different sections of the page disagree, ask the seller before buying. Our label desk organises a stated percentage; it cannot authenticate a fabric or establish whether the seller’s information is accurate.

Measure the job

A pillowcase needs to fit a particular pillow. A scarf needs enough length for the fold you want to make. Use a tape measure on an item you own and like, then compare the listing’s dimensions in the same units. A lifestyle photograph can hide scale. Include closures, hems and whether measurements describe the whole item or only the usable section. Leave the question open if the listing does not say.

Separate fabric from the finished piece

Consider how the product is constructed: a pillowcase closure, a scarf hem, a lining or a detachable fastening can change the experience of using it. Look for photographs of those details rather than relying only on the front view. A product sold as silk may still need clarification about which part contains silk. Keep a short comparison table with composition, dimensions, construction and care instead of comparing titles alone.

Let care affect the decision

Read the care information before ordering, not after the first spill. Can you follow the stated method in your existing routine? Will you need a spare while the item is being cared for? Ask about missing instructions and retain the answer. If the gift recipient would not enjoy the required upkeep, choose a different gift rather than assuming a delicate item is automatically more thoughtful. Finish by checking current seller, returns and delivery information on the marketplace. A useful purchase is one whose details still make sense when the photograph is put away.
